Mitch grew up in Northeast Minneapolis and had the blessing of being raised by Christian parents. He graduated from Bethel in 1981 and has been attending Bethlehem since 1982. He and his wife, Mary, celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary months before Mary went home to be with her Lord in May of 2010. They have four children. Mitch has been teaching youth Sunday School at Bethlehem for several years. In 1988, he began teaching the 5th-6th grade class; currently he teaches the 7th-8th graders. Mitch first began serving on the Council of Elders in 1994.
