Was God Asleep On Duty?

I recently played a role in the funeral of Deron Arnold who died after 140 days in intensive care at the University of Minnesota hospital following a lung transplant. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a boy, Deron became a physician and lived 38-plus years, most of them with the daily disciplines of respiratory exercises and the realization that the fallen world would not go easy on him.

With great confidence in the greatness and goodness of God, he made his boast in Christ to the end, leaving behind his wife, Jan, and 4-year-old twin boys. He was quoted many times at his funeral, and one of my favorites is, “God was not asleep on duty when he made my seventh chromosome.”
