Waiting As a National Winner

Roger Grothe, a Bethlehem member, was named national Landscaper of the Year in 2009.

Roger, how have you been involved at Bethlehem?

I have taught elementary Sunday School and I am involved in Racial Harmony efforts.

How does your being a Christian play out in the operation of your business?

Not surprisingly, the year following the Landscaper of the Year Award was one of our most challenging years ever. Keeping a positive outlook would have been impossible for me without Christ. Christ was my “daily bread” and provided my family’s “daily bread.” My faith has grown dramatically as I have waited on the Lord for answers.

For what were you waiting?

We waited the entire winter for answers to business financing. The answer came perfectly on time in May—but it was a long wait. Week after week we waited and found a new joy in waiting. Actually, I expect most of my answers to come after some period of waiting—not surprisingly. Believing that the answer will be good, no matter the specifics, is joy-producing because it is from the hand of God.

As Pastor John paraphrased my life slogan, “In God’s Hands”: “Whether you are surfing 40-foot waves or stepping over a mud puddle—you’re ‘in God’s hands.’” It’s true and it’s helpful to remember.
