For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.
How Did I Memorize the Sermon on the Mount?
How long did it take you to memorize Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7 that you recited at the Fighter Verse Kick-Off?
Vicki and I first memorized the Sermon on the Mount with our daughters when they were grade-school aged. Over the years I lost it. Then this past fall Betty Dodge asked if I would recite it for the Fighter Verse Kick-Off. I dabbled at it for a couple months and got serious the last 10 days before the Kick-Off.
Dabbled? How?
I printed out all three chapters as long paragraphs and laminated them—four pages—and looked at them occasionally.
Laminated them?
Yes, because I seem to memorize best when I’m out walking, and by laminating them they can withstand wet weather or sweaty hands.
You use a lot of hand gestures when you recite.
Gestures seem to help me get into the moment, to express feelings consistent with the text.
Do you use any memory tricks?
Repetition, repetition, repetition … coupled with earnest appreciation for the God who has allowed me to have access to his book when millions of people down through the ages have not.
