Tethered to the Word

What does it mean to be "tethered to the Word?"  This is one of the questions that our Women's Summer Bible Study small groups discussed last week following the DVD message.

tetherballIn our group, one woman was reminded of a game she played when a child, tether ball.  She explained that if we are "tethered" to the Word, the Word must be the center of our day, taking priority over other things.

I began to think of the ways our lives are "tethered to" or centered on the Word.  As believers, we have a connection to God and His Word, like the tether ball is connected to the pole by a rope.  The further away we are from the Word, perhaps ignoring it, our lives can bounce around in a wild way, even though connected.  However, the more we get "wrapped up" in the Word, the more we trust in God's promises and God's Word provides a stability and a firm foundation. We need to pray like the Psalmist, "Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!" (Ps 119:36)

Nancy Leigh DeMoss, in her message on Titus 2 from True Woman '10, challenged us to be women who are in the Word.  She said,

So what? What do you believe—sound doctrine; and so what? What difference does that make in our lives?
Ladies, the world is never going to be convinced by our arguments about the existence of God, about moral issues, about abortion, about same-sex marriage. I don’t think those are arguments we’re going to win in the secular world because they’ve never bowed the knee to the authority of the Word of God and the Lordship of Jesus Christ. But I’ll tell you what is persuasive, and that is the reality of the gospel lived out in our lives and relationships.

Are you tethered to the Word in a way that makes a difference?

We welcome you to join us this week! It is not too late to register at the door, and limited childcare at the Downtown campus may still be available. You must call the Nursery Coordinator at 612.338.7655 x701 to pre-register your child.
