My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck.
What Jesus Assumed and Inferred
When Jesus said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet’” (Mark 12:35–36), he is implying that the Psalms are divinely given.
When he says, “For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished” (Matthew 5:18), he is inferring that the Old Testament books of the law are from God.
When he flatly states, “If you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me” (John 5:46), he is confirming that Moses speaks for God.
Jesus assumed and inferred that the Scriptures are authored ultimately by God. They are God’s word, and they are utterly true and trustworthy.
