What’s in a Word?

Is it a rainy day, with the family cooped up indoors on vacation, and are you looking for something meaningful to do? Or are you traveling long miles in the car?

Do an acrostic of a word such as your family’s last name, or a Bible character, or your children’s grandparents. Then choose words that describe the main word you have selected. Share the results with the entire family.

Here’s an example.

Baptist, Bible-saturated
Evangelistically spreading the gospel to all peoples
Three campuses Treasuring Christ Together
Households do disciple-making
Learning to devote ourselves to doing good
Emphatically biblical teaching in sermons, classes, and bookstores
Hearts engaged in loving God and neighbor
Enthusiastic passion for the supremacy of God in all things
Magnifying the Lord together in worship

Acrostics can be time-fillers and time-wasters. But not necessarily. Acrostics can help us 1) slow down and think attentively, 2) identify and ponder individual aspects of a multi-faceted subject, and 3) help us get specific with our thanksgiving.
