A 'Screwtape' Conversation, Part 3

Amanda: What would you say, from Screwtape, most impresses you about the character of God?

Pastor Sam: Though unseen, he is relentlessly at work loving his “favourites.” The most clever schemes of the underworld that make permanent and damnable progress to the everlasting regret of unbelievers have only the most temporary success with believers, to the compounded frustration of demonic forces. Greater is he.

Amanda: Ah yes … His love for us “vermin.” Perhaps the most precious of all the lines to me in Screwtape is this: “For we must never forget what is the most repellent and inexplicable trait of our enemy; He really loves the hairless bipeds He has created and always gives back to them with His right hand what He has taken away with his left” (p. 72).

… Even the devil knows that God loves a hairless biped like me.
