A Reason to Beware of Facebook

Perhaps you’ve heard of Pastor Cedric Miller of Living Word Christian Fellowship Church in New Jersey. He banned Facebook. About 50 married leaders in his 1,100-member church are required to either delete their Facebook accounts or resign. Why, you ask?

Twenty couples from his church have had marital problems in the past year after a spouse reconnected with an old flame on Facebook. It can work like this: Someone from the past surfaces, conversations ensue, and sometimes there are physical meet-ups.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers reports that in matrimonial lawsuits 81% of its members have used evidence from social networking sites, or had such evidence used against their clients.

The problem is not Facebook, but the heart. However, Facebook can give the misaligned heart a playground, as can many other environments. Beware going there.

Who is influencing whom? If you can be a godly influence on Facebook, go there. If you are being influenced, flee.
