I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
The volunteers who serve in Sunday School and Wednesday Connection are men and women who can speak and live the truth of God’s word before the eyes of our young people, in the midst of the ups and downs of life.
Sam Helberg is one of these brothers, and he shares his passion below and tells how God blessed him as he served.
Psalm 145:4 has always been a dear verse to me: "One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts." I know that if it were not for the faithful teaching of my pastor and Sunday school leaders when I was growing up, I would not have the same faith in our Lord as I do now.
Now that I am older, it is my responsibility to help train the next generation for Christ. With this in mind, I volunteered as a 5th–6th grade boys small group leader, little realizing how God was going to stretch and grow me more than the young men I taught.
Through the year I faced unexpected challenges, including the death of a friend, a breakup with a girlfriend, two moves, a job loss, and near bankruptcy. Each experience was a chance for me to share God’s everlasting love with my group. Each event was a time for me to teach by living the example, not just speaking about it. Each incident made me point to our Savior; and each time, the teacher become the student.
I only hope my students were as blessed from God as I was. I cannot wait for next year!
We are trusting God to provide team leaders, teachers, worship leaders, small group leaders, and one-on-one aides to serve the children of Bethlehem in the coming year. Perhaps you are one of them.
