Aim:
To spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ by providing worship leadership for the staff, elders and congregation of the South Campus so that the mission of the church is carried out, the theological teaching of the Elder Affirmation of Faith is joyfully embraced, and the “10 Dimensions of Church Life” are made manifest.
Qualifications and Requirements:
He will be expected to joyfully minister in accord with the Bethlehem Pastor’s Covenant. The Pastor for Worship & Music should endeavor to experience and maintain the joyful camaraderie and creative complementation of gifts and ministries of the Preaching Pastor, Executive Pastor, vocational pastors, elders and staff.
The Pastor for Worship & Music will be a member in good standing of Bethlehem Baptist Church. If not a member when called by the church, he will complete the process within three months of the date when employment begins. Beyond the doctrinal and ethical implications in embracing our Affirmation of Faith and our Church Covenant (implicit in membership), the Pastor for Worship & Music will manifest a hearty support for the leadership of the church in general and specifically for that of the Preaching Pastor.
He shall have a good grasp and hearty endorsement of the biblical and theological orientation of the leadership of Bethlehem as expressed in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Elder Affirmation of Faith.
The Pastor for Worship & Music needs to meet the spiritual and character qualifications of elder as found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9 and to exhibit the fruit of the Spirit as found in Galatians 5:22. He should be wise, discerning, decisive, sensitive, tender and firm. He should be a man of prayer and a man of the Word, sensitive to what the Spirit is saying to Bethlehem. He should devote himself to daily prayer and Bible reading for the sake of guarding himself from sin and stirring up his heart and mind to renewed passion for Christ and should lead his family in regular times in the Word and prayer.
The Pastor for Worship & Music must be a leader, collaborator, problem solver and peacemaker.
Personal Skills:
- Leadership—the Pastor for Worship & Music should be able to lead in a variety of contexts (individual, small groups, large groups) in such a way that Jesus Christ and His Gospel are central. He should be a self-starter and an initiative taker.
- Relational—the Pastor for Worship & Music should have a heart to care for people, not just manage systems; that drive should manifest itself in the appropriation of time.
- Administrative—while seeking mainly to shepherd people, the Pastor for Worship & Music should have the skill set and ability to effectively manage the various administrative tasks associated with the position.
- Teacher/Equipper—the Pastor for Worship & Music should be able to rightly handle the Word as he effectively “equips the saints for the work of the ministry.” in the campus’ unique context.
- Organization—The Pastor for Worship & Music will have the organizational skills necessary to work effectively within the context of a large church with multiple staff.
- Communication—The Pastor for Worship & Music will have the communication skills necessary to work effectively within the context of a large church with multiple staff.
- Peacemaker—the Pastor for Worship & Music should be able to tactfully and winsomely unite people with varying perspectives to advance harmony and love and to achieve common goals.
Ministry Responsibilities:

- By maintaining a devotional life of prayer and meditation on the Word.
- By faith-enriching reading and study.
- By engagement in personal and corporate worship.
- By glad participation in mutual care and accountability with other believers.
- Provide pastoral leadership, direction, and oversight for all public worship services and music ministries on the South Campus (50%). This includes:
- Coordinate the planning and leading of all corporate weekend, midweek and other all-campus worship gatherings and special occasions (Christmas, Maundy Thursday, etc.), ensuring that the worship services are given direction, with sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
- Work with other worship staff members (volunteer and part time paid) to oversee the development of campus-specific ensembles, choirs, worship teams, etc. and to communicate all-church music/worship opportunities to the South Campus flock.
- Oversee the creation, direction, training, and use of whatever choirs, ensembles, worship teams, or instrumental groups would help express our philosophy of worship. (10%)
- Oversee the selection, preparation, and development of all worship ministry participants (worship leaders, teams, vocalists, instrumentalists, etc.) who minister in the worship services. (10%)
- Develop the worship leaders of the South Campus (and elsewhere, as appropriate) to lead the congregation well in the ethos of BBC Worship Theology and Philosophy.
- Work with the worship teams to develop equipped and competent servants in musical support and worship leadership.
- Work to infuse the BBC Worship Ethos into worship ministry participants.
- Develop the next generation of worship leaders, vocalists, and musicians through theological and musical education (this is not on a private basis though - more structuring the ministry as a whole to take into account these long term needs of the body e.g. choirs - adult/children's/youth, worship theology seminars/classes, etc.) (5%)
- Model worship outreach ministry as a "goer" both nationally and internationally on mission trips to evangelize and build up the larger body of Christ in worship ministries, teaching and training as appropriate, within our guidelines for ministry leave. (5%)
- Work with those gifted in songwriting to hone their skills and serve the Body with home-grown music, lyrics, and recordings where it is deemed appropriate and helpful for the Body. (5%)
- Serve as a worship leadership resource for Bethlehem College and Seminary, including occasional teaching responsibilities as appropriate, and with approval of South Campus pastor. (5%)
- Participate in fulfilling general BBC pastoral duties, especially those related to facilitating ministry at the South Campus (10%). This includes:
- Enthusiastic participation in the congregational life of the South Campus.
- Willing involvement in both all-church and campus-specific staff meetings and other related pastoral and administrative assignments.
- Hearty support for leadership of South campus pastor and South congregational elders, including acceptance of pastoral duties and administrative assignments as needed and requested by the South campus pastor.
