Dear Parents,

We read in Psalm 127:3, “Children are a gift from the Lord.” Just as children are a rich heritage for their parents, so are they a heritage for the body of Christ. Both parents and members of the body play essential roles in making God’s love real to little children. It is our desire to come alongside parents in nurturing the faith of their children. Our responsibility is to prayerfully model and teach truth.

Significant ministry to children begins in Nursery 1 (0-12 months). Here a foundation of prayer begins for your child as godly men and women are encouraged to “pray without ceasing” for the Lord’s work in the hearts of these little ones. As your child enters Nursery 2 (13-17 months) our prayers for each toddler continue. Because this is the age when your child’s language is developing, we begin introducing Biblical truths through frequent use and illustration. We trust the Holy Spirit to bring understanding and produce faith in our little ones. This pattern of prayer and instruction continues to develop in Nursery 3 (18-24 months) and Beginners (24-36 months) by building a biblical vocabulary and helping your child see a great God through Bible stories they can understand! May the legacy we leave for our children give them eternal joy and glorify our Father in Heaven!

As you invest time in reading these pages, we pray that the partnership between you and the body of Christ at Bethlehem will be strengthened—so that together we will spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of the generations to come.

Bethlehem Baptist Church

A Vision for Nursery Ministry

Our vision is that for generations to come the lives of children and adults who are connected with Bethlehem will be shaped by God, and that His Christ will be their greatest Treasure forever.

• It is a vision of Bethlehem parents feeling well equipped, encouraged and well supported as they raise their children for Christ.
• It is a vision of parents taking advantage of available opportunities for training, service and support in their calling to “train up their child in the way he should go.”
• It is a vision of weekly volunteers laboring side by side, investing their gifts in complementary ways that give strength to the whole.
• It is a vision of Spirit-led caregivers praying continually and specifically against Satan establishing strongholds in the lives of our little ones.
• It is a vision of nursery caregivers persevering in the teaching and modeling of biblical truths.
• It is a vision of the Word of God dwelling richly in our children’s hearts and not merely in their heads.
• It is a vision of our children stepping into adulthood secure in their convictions and grounded in the Word of God with an unshakeable faith.
• It is a vision of our children and our children’s children living with the peace of Christ in their hearts so that whatever they do, whether in word or deed, they may do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father, bearing fruit in every good work and leading many to repentance.

Nursery-Age Children in the Sanctuary

Children are welcomed and encouraged to be part of the Sunday morning worship service. For every family there are times when a child needs special attention. If your child’s needs become a distraction to those worshiping around you, there are two places available at the downtown site where you can meet his or her needs and yet continue to hear the service. There are monitors and pews designated for families located in the Commons just outside the sanctuary doors. On the lower level there is a Restless Child Room equipped with a monitor and a work table for the children’s use. It is down the stairs and to your right just past N3 room (09).

Childcare and Use of Nursery Rooms

Childcare for ages 0-48 months is currently provided during Sunday morning services and Wednesday Kids’ Connection. The M.O.M.S group and Wednesday morning Women’s Bible also have childcare available for those who cannot make other arrangements. Reservations are required along with a set fee which is subsidized by Bethlehem. All parents must stay on the church grounds when using the nurseries. Childcare is not provided for “off site” activities (i.e. small groups). Please contact the Minister for Early Childhood or Childcare Coordinator if you need information regarding childcare availability and guidelines for any other special church events.

Changing stations are available in many of the men’s and women’s restrooms throughout the building. Please use these changing stations if there is a need to change your baby’s diaper as there can be no admittance to the nurseries due to security issues and so that the programs in progress will not be disturbed.

What to Bring

1. Always include a minimum of two diapers. Other than for special needs, disposable diapers are preferred.

2. Bring a complete change of clothes - socks, underpants, pants and shirt. Label each item. While every age baby may need a complete or partial change of clothing, this is particularly needed in Nurseries 1 for infants and again in Beginners when children are being potty trained.

3. For bottle-fed children less than 12 months please provide a plastic bottle. All bottles should be prepared (premixed formula or juice), or formula and measured water provided. Nursery 1 has a refrigerator and microwave for bottle needs. If a child is in Nursery 2, sippy cups of water will be given with a graham cracker snack. If your little one in Nursery 2 is still taking a bottle, please give him the bottle before or after the nursery session, or use the nursing mother’s room for this purpose. This avoids jealousy for freshly weaned children and prevents “bottle sharing” with little friends.

4. Please label everything – bag, blanket, coat, bib, bottle, pacifier, clothes and baby carriers.

Parent Sign-In/Sign-Out

Prior to placing your child in the nursery, please check your baby’s diaper to ensure it is fresh and clean. Then sign in at a kiosk near the nurseries. The kiosk will be open until 15 minutes past service start time. (If the kiosks are closed, please use the kiosk located in the Main Hall next to the Information Desk, or request assistance from the Assistant Childcare Coordinator). You will receive a nametag to put on your child’s back and 2 pick-up tags – one for each parent. You may also ask for asset tags to put on your diaper or diaper bag…let the attendant know how many you need. Then take your little one to the age-appropriate nursery.

When signing in at the nursery, we ask parents to fill in all data on the “Parent Sign-In Sheet”. It is very important for you to communicate where you will be while your child is in our care. All the information you give is used to help meet each child’s particular needs and to contact parents when necessary. Because our space is limited we ask that only one parent sign in (and sign out) each child. We also ask that you pick up your youngest child first and then proceed to the older children. This helps reduce the number of people waiting outside the nursery door.

Once you have signed in and said good bye to your child, hand your child to the caregiver with a smile. It is normal for little ones to sometimes cry when leaving a parent, but this usually does not last long once their attention is redirected. You will be reassured to know that we will not – in most cases – permit a child to cry longer than 10 minutes before paging the parent.

Nursery Pagers and Alpha/Numeric Pager

For the protection of you and your child, the kiosk check-in system provides increased security checks. Each week your child will be given a nametag and you will receive pick-up tags with a new family number printed on it. The fact that this number changes from week to week increases the difficulty for a person trying to illegally claim any child as his own (as in contested custody cases).

If for some reason you are not able to pick your child up personally, any adult you designate may pick your child up for you, but only if we have your signed permission on record (on the family registration form) and only if that person has the child’s correctly numbered pick-up tag. We ask you please not to send brothers and sisters to pick up nursery age children. Each child must be checked out by the person picking him up. For babies from ages 0 – 18 months old you will be given a pager to wear so we can call you if your baby needs your assistance. We will not let your child be unduly sad or uncomfortable in the nursery. If he or she has been crying and continues to be upset for 10 minutes, we will page you.

Please wear the pager given you next to your body, as on a waistband – not just in your pocket –, as they are vibrators and do not give an audible signal. This system provides immediate, silent communication anywhere in the facility at any time.

When a pager is signed out to you, your child will be identified with that pager number. To reach you, we simply push your pager number on a transmitter that activates your pager. If you do not respond to the pager, or if you have not taken a pager, we will summon you when needed by displaying your nametag alpha/numeric ID on the display units in the sanctuary. If you lose a pager, there is a $100 replacement cost which you will need to cover.

If the pick-up tag is lost, only the parent who signed the child in will be allowed to pick up the child. The parent will also be asked to show a driver’s license or legal identification and may be asked to fill out a detailed liability release form.

Pick-Up Procedures

Please be sure to pick up your child promptly after the worship service or Sunday school class ends. Please wait to socialize with friends until after you have picked up your child. Many of our nursery caregivers have children of their own to pick up but are not free to leave until all the nursery children have gone with their parents. We understand that there might be unusual circumstances which delay you. If you are praying for someone or being prayed for by our worship service prayer team, we certainly understand and will gladly care for your child until you are free. When picking up a child we ask that you wait at the sign-in counter to have your child handed to you (and to have your pager/child’s pick-up tag ready to be checked.) Please check your child out while you wait. Again, any adult you designate may pick up your child, but only if he/she has the correct pick-up tag and your signed consent is on the family registration form.

Feeding

We are happy to give clearly labeled, prepared bottles to babies up to 12 months, but we do not give solid food of any kind to babies in Nursery 1. In an effort to prevent choking in our infants even snacks you pack in your diaper bag will not be given to your child. Children 12-36 months are given a snack of water and graham crackers. You can let us know if this is not good for your child when you sign in.

Only parents are allowed to give medicine to their child. Do not put medicine of any kind in bottles that will be given to your baby while he or she is in the nursery.

Please feed your child a complete “meal” before bringing him to the nursery. It helps us to provide a peaceful, happy time for your child if he or she comes to church with a full stomach.

Nursing Mothers

To ensure your baby’s well being, our vibrating pagers make it possible to quietly reach you when your baby is hungry. The Nursing Mothers’ Room is located across the hall from Room 06 (the Beginners 1 room). This room provides privacy, a changing table and speakers so you may listen to the sermon.

Distraught Children

When an infant child is distraught and crying, our caregivers are instructed to:

1. pray for the child

2. change the diaper if needed

3. check with the team leader and Sign-in Sheet for pertinent information

4. offer him/her a bottle or page the mother for nursing

5. comfort the child and try to distract him with a toy or picture

6. walk around the room and talk or sing softly with the child

7. ask help from another worker

8. talk to the team leader for further guidance if the child has not calmed down after crying for a full 10 minutes

9. page parent

When a parent is needed to comfort or care for a child the team leader or Assistant Childcare Coordinator will attempt to locate the parent as quickly as possible. For this reason it is important to always indicate your location on the Parent Sign-In sheet.

If a child should have difficulty adjusting to the nursery, we advise patience and to keep trying. Most often a baby will adjust once the room is familiar and the occurrence becomes routine. If the problem persists, one parent may be asked to serve in the same room as the child for a few weeks and then gradually taper off until the child becomes acclimated to the nursery. In this way we can help change behavior patterns so both the parents’ and child’s nursery experience is positive. (Before serving in a nursery room all parents must fill out an application and complete proper screening. Please read “Caregivers/Volunteers.”)

The “Ministry” of Care-Giving

Because Jesus has told us to let even little children come to Him, we highly value ministry to children beginning at the earliest ages. The Bethlehem nurseries are committed to serving both parents and children in love. It is our joy to join parents in nurturing the faith of their children, teaching the little ones biblical truths, and interceding in prayer for this new generation.

The Children’s Nursery Ministry is divided into 4 areas Downtown, 3 at North and at South:

Nursery 1 “The Fragrance of the Knowledge of Christ” (0-12 months of age):

Loving care and prayer characterize this room. Infants are cuddled, rocked and played with. This nursery offers nap rooms, infant swings, age-appropriate toys and safe space for exploration. Caregivers pray individually for your child. Monthly prayer themes are concentrated on as a prayer guide in praying for this next generation. Worship music is played and/or sung throughout the session. The caregiver/infant ratio is 1:2.

Nursery 2 “Biblical Truths for Young Toddlers” (13-17 months of age):

This nursery provides care for toddlers who are walking. The morning activities include quiet, supervised play, interaction with children through reading books, singing, cuddling, as well as providing for large and small muscle activity. A snack of graham crackers and water is given. Caregivers model prayer by praying with and for the children. Age-appropriate worship music is played during the session. Lesson time is spread throughout the hour as volunteers repeat simple biblical truths to the children and seek to relate them to the children’s experiences. The caregiver/child ratio is 1:3.

Nursery 3 “The Wonders He Has Done” (18-24 months of age):

The session begins with quiet supervised free play. This play consists of using such toys and activities as puzzles, blocks, coloring, play dough and the reading of books. A snack of graham crackers and water is given. A series of four lessons are presented to the children in a group format using an age-appropriate curriculum, “The Wonders He Has Done.” Parents receive weekly lesson handouts and a copy of the songs. Caregivers pray for and with the children. The caregiver/child ratio is 1:4.

Beginner 1 and 2 “His Praiseworthy Deeds” (25-48 months)

Children in these rooms begin with quiet supervised play. A snack of graham crackers and water is given. The lessons are each presented to the children in a group format using the curriculum, “His Praiseworthy Deeds.” Parents are provided with a copy of the songs and weekly lesson handouts. Each lesson’s biblical truths are reinforced during the hour through conversation, play, and puppet shows. Prayer is modeled for the children and caregivers pray with them as well. Monthly Bible verses are taught and the children receive a magnet with the verse on it for home study. Sticker charts are available for incentive as well as verse flashcards for additional help in learning the verses. The caregiver/child ratio is 1:4.

Discipline

NOTE: Behavioral Principles and Expectations for Children and Youth at Bethlehem Baptist Church is a brochure presenting Bethlehem’s general statement on children and discipline. It is available in each nursery and Sunday School department attached to the Family Registration forms.

Discipline for preschoolers (24-48 months):

When discipline of a child’s behavior is needed our first step is to explain the inappropriate behavior to the child and communicate expectations in language that a preschooler would easily understand. We try to make eye contact with the child so it is clear to them what is expected. We do this in love. If the behavior is repeated a second time we use the “time out” method in the “thinking spot” (for children over 24 months). This gives a child time to calm himself and to think over a different approach to his play. We use this time to explain why he is in the “time out” and we try to find a better way to deal with the problem behavior next time. A child is left in “time out” 1 minute per year of his age. For example, a 3 year old child would be given a 3 minute “time out.” We do not spank children. If there are problems with behavior requiring parental attention we will communicate with the parents; if immediate attention is necessary, we will call the parent to the nursery. It is our desire to partner with parents as they strive to bring their children up in the love and admonition of the Lord.

Discipline for infants and toddlers (less than 24 months):

If there are behavior problems with children younger than 24 months, we simply remove them from the situation and redirect their attention to a new activity. However if a toddler is harming another child (i.e. hair pulling, biting, pushing) we may firmly say “no, no” to them in love. If any behavior that puts other children at risk becomes a recurring problem, the parents will be asked to keep the child out of the nursery until the behavior can be controlled.

Promotion

Promotions are done monthly in Nurseries 1, 2, and 3. The babies are moved all together at the beginning of each month. The promotion is done on the basis of the age of the child. Exceptions are made when either the parent or the Coordinator sees that a different class placement would be an advantage to the safety or development of the child. It also happens, not frequently, that a nursery must be protected from overcrowding and so the Minister for Early Childhood decides to delay the promotion of children normally scheduled to be moved to that nursery until it is possible to do so. It is very important that the Minister for Early Childhood and parents communicate regarding the proper time to promote a child. Please call any time to discuss promotions or any other issue.

Preschoolers in Worship

It has long been Bethlehem’s ideal and our heart’s desire to see children worship with their parents. If you choose to have your child in the Sanctuary with you during the singing portion of the service and bring him to the nursery before the sermon, please sign him in at the nursery counter so that we can reserve space for him. Indicate to the nursery staff that you will be bringing him back later. Be sure that nursery staff is aware of your child’s arrival when you return to the nursery. If your child is consistently able to sit through the entire service, he may be ready to worship with you regularly. Once a child celebrates his fourth birthday, we ask that he or she no longer use the Beginners Room when Sunday School is not in session and instead goes to worship with you.

Caregivers/Volunteers

Our Nursery Department is staffed with screened volunteers who want to serve. It is our policy not to require all parents of children in the nursery to serve in the nursery. Caring for children is a ministry, not a duty. However, it requires many committed people to carry on the nursery program, and we are grateful for every parent who responds to the Lord’s nudging in this direction. It is our desire to staff the nurseries with individuals from the body of Christ who love the Lord with all their heart, all their soul and all their mind. It is also our desire to staff the nurseries with caregivers who love others more than themselves and want to serve the children of Bethlehem and their parents.

Children who wish to serve in the nursery must be at least 9 years of age and accompanied by a parent while working in the nursery. Junior and senior high students, ages 12-15, may help in any nursery except Nursery 1 with or without their parent. Everyone serving in the infant room (0-12 months) must be 16 years or older. All youth volunteers will receive on-the-job training, a Nursery Volunteer Handbook listing all nursery policies, and are required to attend the annual Youth Nursery Training.

Everyone desiring to serve in children’s ministry at Bethlehem, including our youth volunteers, is asked to fill out an application and complete our screening process. The purpose is to provide a safe environment for our children and to also protect those who serve our children. In order to create a secure, familiar environment for the children, our caregivers are asked to commit to serving for one year (with time off as needed). Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Practicing nursery emergency evacuations is part of the normal Sunday morning routine. Children in Nurseries 3 and Beginners practice walking by ropes weekly. At least once or twice a year we practice evacuating the building—this includes all nursery and Sunday School children (infants-Grade 8). Parents are always notified if there are plans to go outside of the building.

In case of an actual evacuation at the downtown site, please meet us outside in the southwest walled corner of the parking lot to pick up your child. Do not attempt to pick up your child in the nursery. Emergency procedures have been carefully established to safely remove children from the building. All children are carried or walked in an orderly fashion by caregivers and Bethlehem staff. For a detailed EMERGENCY EVACUATION POLICY please contact the Minister for Early Childhood.

Well Child Policy

If your child is exhibiting any of the following symptoms and it is impossible to keep him home, please keep him with you at church. Team Leaders in all departments are authorized to turn away ill children for the sake of other children and caregivers present. These symptoms can indicate a contagious illness:

1. temperature over 100 degrees within the last 24 hours

2. vomiting

3. diarrhea or abnormally loose stools

4. any undiagnosed rash

5. unusual tiredness, pale complexion, irritability or restlessness

6. discharge that is yellow or green in color; or is clear but a continual flow from the nose or eyes

7. a wet cough - one that produces yellow or green discharge

8. an eye infection

If your child comes down with a contagious condition (such as chicken pox, measles, pin worms, lice, etc.) nd was in the nurseries just before or at the onset of the illness, please call the Minister for Early Childhood, Joyce Heinrich @ (612) 445-3498, and let her know. She can then inform other parents whose children may have been exposed. A notice will be handed to parents of children in the nursery that your child attends.

When a child is getting over a contagious illness, please call the Minister for Early Childhood for guidelines to determine when he/she is well enough to return to the nursery or Sunday School. Two of the most common illnesses are listed here:

Infections (strep, impetigo, conjunctivitis etc.) - children should be on antibiotics for at least a full 24 hours

Chicken pox - all lesions must be dry and crusted over

Nursery Cleanliness and Safety

In order to ensure our nurseries are clean and safe for your child, we disinfect all toys that have been played with after each child’s playtime. Only toys that can be easily cleaned are accepted into the nursery. Crib sheets are used by one child only and then placed in the dirty laundry. Disposable gloves are used for diapering and hands are washed with soap and warm water after each diaper change. Diaper changing paper is replaced and the changing table surfaces disinfected after each diaper change.

All our nursery rooms are vacuumed and cleaned after each daily use. Nursery carpets are also “extracted” and “disinfected” each quarter. Our rooms are regularly inspected for safety hazards and health concerns.

The Minister for Early Childhood and the Assistant Childcare Coordinators are certified in Infant/Child CPR and First Aid. We also have a medical team (doctors and nurses) available on Sundays and a plan formulated in case of emergency.

Dedication of Children to the Lord

“The Dedication of Children is an act of faith performed by parents in the presence of God and His people in which we solemnly and earnestly offer ourselves up to God for the holy task of being Biblical parents and in which we offer our children up to God for His wise and sovereign purposes in their lives, pledging our allegiance to God above all things.” (Pastor John Piper)

“Though it is sometimes difficult to discern God’s will regarding how we should invest our lives, as parents we can be absolutely certain that God has called us to a very significant and serious Kingdom responsibility. As a parent you have a specific call of God on your life. Like all believers it is a call to faith and obedience. Specifically, it is a call to build the Word of God, the character of Christ and the joy of the Lord into your child’s life. When you dedicate your child you are promising as parents to be faithful to this call of God. As your brothers and sisters we will witness this promise, and we will pledge to do all we can to support and encourage you in fulfilling these covenant promises.” (Pastor David Michael)

Foundation Builders 1

To help parents prepare to make the significant promises included in the child dedication service and to help establish the partnership between home and church, Foundation Builders 1 (the first in a series of parenting seminars) is presented three times each year. Parents are required to participate in this three-hour class prior to dedicating a child. (It is not necessary to repeat the class for future children.) All parents of infants and young children are encouraged to attend Foundation Builders 1, even if they are not preparing for a dedication service at Bethlehem. It is an opportunity for you to understand the vision of parenting and children’s discipleship at Bethlehem and to learn how we hope to coordinate our efforts with yours as you seek to nurture the faith of your child.

Prayer Ministry

We would love to pray specifically for your child and family. Our nursery prayer team is made up of pastors, Bethlehem staff members, Nursery Staff and other brothers and sisters in Christ – all committed to praying for our children. Each nursery counter has prayer request cards available. Or you may call the Minister for Early Childhood if there is a specific prayer request you would like to share. She will return your call promptly. Our heart’s desire is that God would get the glory, and those prayed for would receive encouragement and love!

When You Have a Baby

To have your baby announced from the pulpit and the announcement placed in the Star, call Joyce Heinrich (612) 455-3498. Be ready to give the pronunciation and spelling of the baby’s name, the date of birth, and the names and spellings and pronunciations of the parents’ names. If it is an adoption, we would also like the date of the adoption or arrival date into the family. When you have your baby announced, your information will be sent to those who coordinate meals for new babies.

How Parents Can Support the Nursery

• Pray for the nursery caregivers, teachers & children

• Serve children and their parents in the nursery, partnering in the nurturing of the faith of our children

• Volunteer as a room and toy cleaner, usually 3 times a year

• Volunteer to help with office jobs on an on-call basis

• Be a part of the laundry team

• Share your outgrown, clean and durable toys (Please speak to the Minister for Early Childhood regarding all donations)

• Share constructive suggestions for improving the nursery with the Assistant Childcare Coordinator or Minister for Early Childhood… (then be willing to be part of the improvements).
