Crisis Caregiver Training
Crisis Intervention is not psychotherapy; rather, it is a specialized acute emergency mental health intervention which requires specialized training. As physical first aid is to surgery, crisis intervention is to psychotherapy.
Thus, crisis intervention is sometimes called “emotional first aid”. This program is designed for teach participants the fundamentals of, and a specific protocol for, individual crisis intervention.
This course is designed for anyone who desires to increase their knowledge of individual (one-on-one) crisis intervention techniques in the fields of Business & Industry, Crisis Intervention, Disaster Response, Education, Emergency Services, Employee Assistance, Healthcare, Homeland Security, Mental Health, Military, Spiritual Care, and Traumatic Stress.
Who should attend?
Any follower of Jesus Christ interested in the use of faith-based resources in healing in times of trauma should find this course useful.
Course Objectives
- Understand the nature and definitions of a psychological crisis and crisis intervention.
- Understand the resistance, resiliency, recovery continuum.
- Understand the nature and definition of critical incident stress management and its role as a continuum of care.
- Discuss issues and findings of evidence-based practice as it relates to psychological crisis intervention.
- Practice basic crisis communication techniques.
- Be familiar with common psychological and behavioral crisis reactions, including empirically-derived predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder.
- Understand the putative and empirically-derived mechanisms of action in psychological crisis intervention.
- Practice the SAFER-Revised model of individual psychological crisis intervention.
- Understand how the SAFER-Revised model may be altered for suicide intervention.
- Understand and discuss the risks of iatrogenic “harm” associated with psychological crisis intervention and further discuss how to reduce those risks.

Trainer Biography
Chaplain Bill Fogarty volunteers as a Senior Chaplain with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Charlotte Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Rev. Fogarty is the Pastor of First Baptist Church of Weddington, NC.
In addition to 30 years experience as a pastor, he is an ICISF Trained Trainer in Group Crisis Intervention, Advanced Group Crisis Intervention, Pastoral Crisis Intervention, Pastoral Crisis Intervention II, CISM: Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support, Law Enforcement Perspectives in CISM, and Strategic Response to Crisis. He also has received the Certificates of Specialized Training in the field of Mass Disasters and Terrorism and Spiritual Care In Crisis Intervention from ICISF.
Chaplain Fogarty is a member of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and the International Conference of Police Chaplains. He holds a B.S. degree from Georgia College, a M.Ed. degree from the University of Georgia and advanced training at the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
