II. Lines of Accountability
Under the Lord, the Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship is responsible to the congregation of Bethlehem Baptist Church, subordinate to the Elders and to the Lead Pastor for Life Training (Sam Crabtree) and the Pastor for Parenting and Family Discipleship (David Michael). Most directly he shall report to the Pastor for Child and Youth Discipleship (Gil McConnell) in all areas relating to the specific tasks of this job description and the conditions of his employment in accordance with the employee handbook.
The Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship should endeavor to experience and maintain the joyful camaraderie and creative complementation of gifts and ministries of the pastors, elders and staff.
III. Qualifications for the Position
The Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship must meet the spiritual and character qualifications of elder as found in 1 Timothy 3:1–7 and Titus 1:6-9 and to exhibit the fruit of the Spirit as found in Galatians 5:22. He should be wise, discerning, decisive, sensitive, tender, and firm. He should be a man devoted to daily prayer and Bible reading for the sake of guarding himself from sin and stirring up his heart and mind to renewed passion for Christ. He should regularly lead his family in reading the word and family prayer. He should be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. He should be a self-starter and an initiative taker. He should be an articulate communicator of the vision and ministries of the church. He needs to have significant inter-personal skills and relate well to ethnically diverse peoples.
He should possess the administrative, organizational and communication skills necessary to work well within the context of a large church with multiple staff.
The Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship will be a member in good standing of Bethlehem Baptist Church. If not a member when called by the church, he will complete the process within three months of the date when employment begins. His life should manifest a good grasp, a hearty endorsement and application of the standards set forth in Bethlehem Elder Affirmation of Faith and the ethical implications expressed in the Church Covenant. The Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship will also manifest a hearty support for the leadership of the church in general and specifically for that of the Pastor for Preaching and Vision.
The Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship will possess pastoral experience and proven effectiveness, particularly in ministry to parents and young people.
IV. Ministry Responsibilities
The Pastor for Young Adult (Sr. High) Discipleship will possess pastoral experience and proven effectiveness and will be particularly responsible for the following specific duties:
General Responsibilities
- Maintain regular office hours and availability for general pastoral responsibilities
- Faithfully attend staff meetings, prayer meetings and other department and all-church events as assigned.
- Be available for participating and leading in weekend services or other BBC gatherings
- Together with the other Family Discipleship Department (FDD) leaders assist with the development and application of the Vision for Family Discipleship.
- Maintain good communication, cooperation, and coordination with all staff and departments of the church.
- Regularly identify and facilitate ways to advance the priorities of the church (racial harmony, missions, TCT expansion, evangelism, urban ministry, etc.) through the influence of this position.
- Together with the rest of the department staff strengthen the partnership between the church and parents to nurture the faith of young people.
- Along with the rest of the pastoral staff and elders, assist in providing pastoral care and support for the congregation with particular attention given to the parents, young people, volunteers and staff related to this department on the North Campus.
- Other pastoral duties as assigned.
Young Adult (Sr. High)
- Provide leadership for all North Campus Sunday and midweek programs as well as other activities considered strategic for accomplishing the mission of the church and the philosophy of ministry for young adults (Sr High).
- Coordinate with other church leaders with a view to incorporating young people in the broader activities of the church on the North Campus.
- Coordinate with other pastors and ministry leaders (such as small groups) to insure that young adults (Sr. High) have ample opportunities to engage in worship, study, prayer, and outreach.
- Supervise and direct all other ministry staff working with young adults (Sr. High) on the North Campus insuring that there is proper orientation and training according to the guidelines set forth by the FDD.
- Faithfully labor to support and equip parents and other gifted and spiritually exemplary lay leaders to facilitate the preparation and training of young adults at Bethlehem on the North Campus.
“Transition Years” (5th-8th grade)
Work in partnership with the North and Downtown/South Campus Pastor for Child and Youth Discipleship and the Coordinator of Family Life events to provide support and leadership for all activities considered strategic for accomplishing the mission of the church and the philosophy of ministry for youth in the “transition years” (5th-8th grade) with primary focus on the North Campus.
V. Job Assessment
- His annual compensation will be determined by the Lead Pastor for Operations or his agent and reviewed annually.
- This job description will be reviewed and possibly revised annually by the North Campus Pastor for Child and Youth Discipleship.
- There will be an annual performance review for this position conducted by the North Campus Pastor for Child and Youth Discipleship in accordance with church policies and procedures.
